High Ropes Course: Welcome

The Course

During my freshman year of high school, I began building a small high ropes course in my backyard. I designed the entire course myself and constructed it with help from my younger brother and sister. As I progressed through high school, I was able to apply more of what I learned in class to the project—using math and physics to improve the design and construction.

Over time, my growing knowledge of building allowed me to strengthen and refine the platforms, making them both sturdier and safer than before.

Spacenet

After installing three ziplines over 100 feet long and five sturdy platforms on the ropes course, I decided to add another element. After some research, I chose to build a small spacenet at the end of the course, about ten feet above the ground. A spacenet is a large hammock, but it takes on a freeform shape because it is handmade.

The fifty-square-foot spacenet was handwoven using 550 Type III paracord, which I purchased in 1,000-foot spools. After approximately twenty hours of weaving and knotting, the spacenet was complete. It can now comfortably hold six people, allowing them to float among the trees.
